Dr. GAIL “Kaila” KAWAKAMI is a law partner at Est8Planning Counsel LLLC located in Honolulu. She was born and raised in the charming little town of Hilo, Hawaii. One day, Gail felt the call of the wild and found herself living in Alaska. In Alaska, she worked for the State of Alaska while continuing her higher education. She received her Ph.D. in Counselor Education from the University of Alaska, Fairbanks (UAF); M.A. from Alaska Pacific University; and B.A. from the University of British Columbia. Gail is also a Lewis & Clark Law School graduate, where she was selected by faculty and staff to join the prestigious Cornelius Honor Society, a coveted award bestowed on law students who have demonstrated excellence in scholarship, leadership, and service. Gail is licensed to practice law in Oregon, Hawaii and Alaska. In Alaska, Gail externed with the Superior Court and practiced civil and criminal law. In addition, she lectured graduate level courses at the UAF Counseling Program. In Hawaii, she was an attorney for the Legal Aid Society of Hawaii in Waianae, and the Veterans Benefits Coordinator for the Volunteer Legal Services Hawaii. Gail then joined her spouse Scott Makuakane at Est8Planning Counsel LLLC, where she and Scott are partners in Law, Life, and Love (not necessarily in that order).
Gail’s life adventures include living above the Arctic Circle in the rugged and pristine Alaska Brooks Range and the Selawik National Wildlife Refuge; traversing the thrilling whitewater rapids of the Snake River in Hells Canyon and the Nenana River in Denali National Park, Alaska; hunting wild pigs and rounding up cattle on horseback with Hawaiian Paniolos on the flanks of Mauna Kea. During her free time, Gail enjoys teaching new tricks to Rudy, the law firm’s Top Dog of Puplick Relations and Paw Pawtner, as well as learning Japanese, Spanish and Chess.
